The painting depicts a famous Biarritz landmark: the Villa Belza, also known as the Devil’s House. It overlooks the Devil’s Hole, a chasm where waves crash violently during storms. Belza means “black” in Basque, and the medieval-style villa has long been surrounded by legends and mysteries. It witnessed the splendor of the Belle Époque, with extravagant parties hosted by the Prince of Wales. Yet Anaïs Zhang paints the villa from afar, from above. The sea is calm, the sky serene, and the ghosts of the past seem peacefully asleep.
This work belongs to the Le Poème de la Mer series, where Anaïs Zhang paints figures often seen from behind, absorbed in the presence of the ocean, frequently seated on the iconic benches of the urban landscape. The artist does not depict the sea directly, but rather the landscape as it is experienced through the gaze of the passerby. These works, imbued with poetry and quiet narration, transform contemplation into an emotional experience, where color becomes the vehicle for reverie, solitude, and an inner dialogue with the infinite.

Biography
Anaïs zhang
Based in Biarritz, Anaïs Zhang is a Chinese-born French artist with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Rooted in color-rich, modern painting, her work weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination, and has recently been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.
