Set on the Grande Plage, the scene captures a couple sitting at the edge of the boardwalk, sharing a beer despite the stormy weather. Both are silently drawn toward the ocean. Like them, we become absorbed by the sea — and by the painting itself.
This piece belongs to the Le Poème de la Mer series, where Anaïs Zhang paints figures often seen from behind, absorbed in the presence of the ocean, frequently seated on the iconic benches of the urban landscape. The artist does not depict the sea directly, but rather the landscape as it is experienced through the gaze of the passerby. Imbued with poetry and quiet narration, this series transforms contemplation into an emotional experience, where color becomes the vehicle for reverie, solitude, and an inner dialogue with the infinite.

Biography
Anaïs zhang
Based in Biarritz, Anaïs Zhang is a Chinese-born French artist with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Rooted in color-rich, modern painting, her work weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination, and has recently been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.
