Les maîtres-nageurs (The Lifeguards) is inspired by an old black-and-white photograph of the Port-Vieux. The Rocher de la Vierge can be seen in the background. The bathers’ costumes possess a quaint charm, though the scene itself remains timeless. Port-Vieux is a small beach, without the powerful waves of the Côte des Basques or the Grande Plage. Generations of children have learned to swim there. With this collection, Anaïs Zhang returns to traditional painting, though her experience with digital art continues to influence her palette and color choices.
This work belongs to the Timeless series, dedicated to the visual memory of Biarritz, drawing on photographic archives and historical illustrations reinterpreted through painting and digital media. Anaïs Zhang brings forth landscapes and scenes that have shaped the identity of a city, in a dialogue between past and present, where color acts as a transformative force, revealing a collective memory.

Biography
Anaïs zhang
Based in Biarritz, Anaïs Zhang is a Chinese-born French artist with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Rooted in color-rich, modern painting, her work weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination, and has recently been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.
