The painting depicts the iconic Rocher de la Vierge. The statue was erected in the 19th century by whalers wishing to thank the Virgin Mary for saving them from shipwreck. The artist drew inspiration from a photograph (glass plate negative) by Maurice Trubert, a musician and diplomat from Biarritz who lived from 1857 to 1921. A solitary figure can be seen on the footbridge. The location remains unchanged, though it is nowadays often crowded with tourists. The misty effects and the pink and blue hues lend Anaïs Zhang’s work a dreamlike quality.
This work belongs to the Timeless series, dedicated to the visual memory of Biarritz, drawing on photographic archives and historical illustrations reinterpreted through painting and digital media. Anaïs Zhang brings forth landscapes and scenes that have shaped the identity of a city, in a dialogue between past and present, where color acts as a transformative force, revealing a collective memory.
La passerelle du rocher de la Vierge is inspired by a photograph from the “Archives départementales des Landes, Fonds Eugène et Maurice TRUBERT, 84 FI, donated by Emmanuel CHAUCHAT and his son Aymeric CHAUCHAT, descendants of the TRUBERT family.”
