Brise marine (Sea Breeze) is inspired by an old black-and-white photograph titled Typical Biarritz. The Rocher de la Vierge. The lifeboats and the semaphore. Anaïs Zhang’s version, dominated by yellow tones, captures the stifling atmosphere of the summer heat. The figures in period clothing — long skirts, flowered hats, and jackets ill-suited to the season — seek relief in the sea breeze. A woman beneath a large parasol has found a shaded refuge.
This work belongs to the Timeless series, dedicated to the visual memory of Biarritz, drawing on photographic archives and historical illustrations reinterpreted through painting and digital media. Anaïs Zhang brings forth landscapes and scenes that have shaped the identity of a city, in a dialogue between past and present, where color acts as a transformative force, revealing a collective memory.

Biography
Anaïs zhang
Based in Biarritz, Anaïs Zhang is a Chinese-born French artist with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. Rooted in color-rich, modern painting, her work weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination, and has recently been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris.
